Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media

Roy Rosenzweig Center for History & New Media

We create open education resources for K–12 history classes, turn historical sources into datasets and visualizations, create compelling historical narratives for public audiences, and educate the next generation of digital historians.

Founded in 1994 by the visionary historian Roy Rosenzweig, RRCHNM has spent three decades advancing its founding mission: to use digital media and computer technology to democratize history: to incorporate multiple voices, reach diverse audiences, and encourage broad participation in presenting and preserving the past.

The historians at RRCHNM are part of the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University. We combine the focused expertise of a research center dedicated to digital history with the intellectual breadth of a large history department and a vibrant doctoral program. Our work serves audiences ranging from K–12 teachers and the students they teach, to scholars and graduate students working at the frontiers of the discipline, to members of the public who encounter the past through our online projects. We also collaborate with cultural heritage institutions that share our commitment to making history accessible to all.
